Cheap and Dirty Gamer: AirMech Briskly Back and Forth

Josh Lee of JoshLeeDotCom fame likes video games and despite his childish fascination with exploring other galaxies (or at least piloting spacecrafts around them) he often suggests some pretty fun titles that fall outside of the Space Flight Sim genre. While his recent recommendation of AirMech does involve a bit of flying, it also involves mechs and mechs happen to be the great gaming equalizer.

AirMech is a MOBA/RTS mash-up that has you piloting a mech that happens to be able transform into a multitude of flying vehicles. In addition to flying your little ode-to-Transformers around, you’re also tasked with building units that will attack the enemy. While it seems like quite a bit for one person to do, the systems in place to facilitate the action work quite well, though that doesn’t mean the ultra fast pace of the game isn’t a slight barrier of entry. Let’s just say that the excitement over switching between robot and jet got the best of me and my enemy benefited from the distraction.

Being that it is a free-to-play game, there are micro-transactions involved, but there is a solid chunk of 100% free features as well so you won’t feel like having an open wallet is the only way to play. That being said, the prices are reasonable and the items you purchase, from new pilots and mechs to more powerful units for your army are all pretty interesting and will most likely give you a slight edge while playing.

My time with AirMech has been somewhat light, but my enthusiasm for it is anything but. It’s a great looking game what what appears to be some lasting appeal and definitely harkens back to an age when we could play with toys and still have the respect of our peers (I miss you childhood). Apparently, Josh Lee knows what it takes to have fun even if he is kind of a jerk.

AirMech is available as a free download as well as a Google Chrome app. It will also be available through Steam in the near future.

Not all gamers have the funds to play full priced games, but that doesn’t mean that gaming quality has to suffer. There are good free and cheap games everywhere, games specifically made for the sexy survivors among us.
