Cheap and Dirty Gamer: What the Hell is a Maple Story?

MapleStory

These children really shouldn’t be adventuring so intensely.

I realize that everyone and their mother has been MapleStory-ing for God knows how long, but I’ve yet to discover the entire internet so don’t even start with all that pretentious BS homies! I’ll straight up slice your anus, I’ll do it. For those of you that have not had any sort of direct interaction with the über popular side-scrolling RPG, my beloved Steam has made it available in a very convienient form and I’d like to share my experiences with you. Brace yourself, your love muscles might quiver.

MapleStory has little to do with the beloved tree or syrup, but that doesn’t stop it from being a fun-ish take on the MMO genre.  Nexcon’s little darling has most everything you’d expect minus a single D on the perspective scale which does help it stand out a bit among its brethern. I haven’t lost myself too deeply into the world quite yet, but from what I’ve heard from other Maples (I believe that is what your character is called) it is pretty easy to do so.

MapleStory

I’d hug you guys if it wasn’t for the biting, scratching and thirst for my blood.

You’ll be doing quite a bit of monster slaying but the unfortunate reality of the situation is that a lot of these monsters are pretty cute. I felt a bit like I was murdering someone’s pets during my time playing the game which I assume is not the exact premise the developers were going for. I got over this eventually and began to enjoy the rush of bashing a large eyed creature over the head with whatever weapon was at hand. Don’t worry, my real life pets survived the evening.

MapleStory is currently free-to-play and does feature everyone’s favorite transaction of the micro variety, but I was able to get enough out of the game without having to dig into my coin purse. That being said, a lot of these games have a pretty low ceiling when it comes to having fun without spending money, so be prepared to bump your head and rattle a chandelier or two.

Cheap and Dirty Gamer – Being cheap used to be an insult, but with the economy in the dumps it’s now a survival skill. Being dirty also used to be an insult, but that changed after Christina Aguilera’s song came out. Not all gamers have the funds to play full priced games, but that doesn’t mean that gaming quality has to suffer. There are good free and cheap games everywhere, games specifically made for the sexy survivors among us.
