Techland Upgrading Medieval Dead Island Mod into Project Hell

by on August 28, 2012 at 4:19pm

Last year, Dead Island and Techland gave gamers one hell of a zombie playground. Its sandbox gameplay and brutal first-person combat left its savage mark in the crowded zombie game genre.

It should come as no surprise that the developers were having as much fun with their game engine as our co-op parties were. As it turns out, some of the team was working on a weapon mod that incorporated magic spells and medieval weaponry. I’m guessing the mod was pretty damn fun because Techland has announced they are converting it into a standalone game codenamed Project Hell.

Project Hell

Because hacking and slashing is the best way to fight Hell.

What will Project Hell be like? I’ll let Techland tell you:

Our main goal is to make a game we can all enjoy playing so don’t expect unicorns and fairies – we prefer breaking through hordes of undead minions only to slaughter their devilish and loathsome masters in a bloody boss-fight.

Now, achieving satisfying first person hacking and slashing is no small feat, but Techland pulled it off once and the fantasy genre could use some new blood at this point. It’s still an early work in progress but you can keep an eye on the Project Hell blog.
