Killer Instinct Isn’t Dead, Microsoft Refiles for Trademark

by on September 18, 2012 at 4:05pm

Rare’s back catalog is a bit difficult to work with thanks to its close ties with Nintendo. Obvious Nintendo properties like Donkey Kong Country or Donkey Kong 64 aren’t possible. Goldeneye not only had Nintendo issues to jump over, but movie rights to the franchise belong to Activision (which tried its best at a remake). I had become content that Banjo-Kazooie and Perfect Dark were as nostalgic as we were going to get. After all, if Microsoft wanted to make a move with anything else in Rare’s history, they would have done so, right?

Well, yesterday Microsoft officially “renewed or refiled a trademark application” for Killer Instinct.

Killer Instinct

What does that mean? Nothing really. But at least we know that Microsoft is aware that it owns the rights to the franchise which is the best type of combobreaker fans can hope for at this point.

Personally, I hope they keep it simple and give us a downloadable HD remake to test the waters of a full reboot. I always enjoyed the characters in Killer Instinct’s roster and I’ve gotten my fix of my other two favorite fighting franchises from the 90′s so I’m ready for #3.
