Obsidian Sets Kickstarter Funding Record with Project Eternity

by on October 18, 2012 at 5:26pm

People apparently love their isometric RPG’s because Obsidian just reset the Kickstarter records in raising $3.98 million for its upcoming Project Eternity. Inspired by the likes of Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale, and Planescape: Torment, Project Eternity promises a rich world for questing and real-time tactical party combat with a pause system.

Project Eternity

Everyone wants to party.

Obsidian’s pedigree cannot be denied with team members responsible for creating the aforementioned Icewind Dale series and Planescape: Torment, and, oh yeah, the original Fallout and Fallout 2. Project Eternity will enable the team to return to its PC RPG roots and it has been floored by the amount of support the project has received. After quickly reaching its now comparatively modest goal of $1.1 million, Obsidian’s only real challenge was stay ahead of the funding with the creation of stretch goals for adding additional features in the game.

This all shows what I know. I assumed Double Fine’s record setting Kickstarter of $3.3 million was a fluke that would drum up interest in the service, but not have a real competitor for at least a year. We’re still waiting to see how these major video game Kickstarters pan out, but hats off to Obsidian for getting its fans involved in order to get a chance to work on this passion project.
