Games of Shame: Call of Duty

Games of Shame: Call of Duty

There are few other games that spark such an intense burning argument of indifference than the Call of Duty franchise. Oddly enough, I have less difficulty explaining the things I like and dislike about Call of Duty with people who don’t play video games versus some who happen to love games. I find that sad. Someone who is not knowledgeable about game design and mechanics often only serves me a very one-sided conversation which usually ends with my audience saying, “That sounds [...]

REPLY TO ALL: Falling into Gamer Stereotypes

We’ve talked about negative and false gaming stereotypes and wanting to do our best to avoid fitting into them so as to not reinforce the ignorant perception of our culture, but this is not always that easy. What gamer stereotype do you most embody and what have you had to do to keep it in check? Want in on the weekly conversation? Every Wednesday we pose a question on Twitter, Facebook, and Google+. You can answer from Wednesdays through Mondays on [...]

In Gaming We Trust: Stop Pretending Gamers Do Not Matter

In Gaming We Trust: Stop Pretending Gamers Do Not Matter

Every time you pretend gaming, or the game industry, doesn’t matter, you’re putting on blinders and living in another world. I have a love/hate relationship with Facebook. I came across an Instagram photo, taken by an acquaintance, of an ad ran by our good friends at Net Heads titled Video Game Summer Camp. The caption of this photo said, “Something is wrong with this picture.” Writer’s Note: While traditionally I don’t like to rant, I felt compelled to make the [...]

H21′s Games of the Year 2011

When asked about this topic, I immediately drew a cold sweat followed by violent shivers. These shivers eventually faded, and I was able to begin trying to calculate which games would make the list. I’ve never actually sat down and made a list like this before, and while I may seem horribly unqualified, you will still sit here and read it anyway to find out what my inner child deemed worthy of my top games of 2011. Without further adieu, [...]

The 2011 Grimmys: Competitive Multiplayer Game of the Year

Multiplayer gaming is both for playing with friends who just can’t be there with you (or for those who don’t like to share their valuable screen space) and for those who like to completely own no0bs and dominate their competition. This is for the second group. The Nominees Mortal Kombat - Pit yourself Mano-a-mano, toe to toe, with your opponent in this rebirth of the Mortal Kombat franchise. Sometimes kicking the ever-loving crap out of your opponent is all you need to prove that [...]

The 2011 Grimmys: Steady Sequel of the Year

Of the games that are on obvious sequel release schedules or the ones that came out of nowhere to titillate our fantasies of living out these scenarios, these are the games that stood high above the rest. The Nominees Gears of War 3 – There was a lot riding on this installment of the Gears trilogy by Epic Games. Not only did we get some closure on a lot of loose ends, but we got to see more of our favorite characters [...]

First Modern Warfare 3 DLC Announced for January

Modern Warfare 3, the record-shattering behemoth, is slated to release its first DLC on January 24 exclusively on Xbox Live. The PS3 and PC markets will eventually receive this DLC also, but it is custom for XBL to get its hands on the DLC sooner. Robert Bowling, a popular Infinity Ward community guru announced it today on Elite TV. He wouldn’t go into extreme detail on what was going to be released, but he did say that it was going [...]

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Review: If Michael Bay Started a War

War is hell unless Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games have anything to say about it. From roaring gunfire, explosions on all sides and invigorating cut scenes, players have very little opportunity to rest on their laurels when playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Since it’s release on November 8, gamers have questioned whether the game is a true sequel or a glorified expansion to Modern Warfare 2. It’s been heralded for it’s record-breaking sales by the media and criticized [...]
