Gaming Connoisseur: Gaming Marathons Part 1: Preparation

What I consider a gaming marathon today was actually just called gaming back when I was a young lad (what I call responsibility today was also vastly different as cleaning my room is one of many things I have to do now, oh childhood, how I squandered you). Today’s adult gamer just doesn’t have the time or resources to validate playing games for extended periods of time on a regular basis. Sure, I get my two to three-hour sessions in when [...]

Think of the Adults: I’m Glad My Wife Isn’t a Gamer

When finding a lifetime mate, people often look for individuals with similar interests to their own. I definitely had this in mind when compiling my own top ten list (before meeting my wife that is). I wanted a girl that liked drinking beer, loved watching the UFC, enjoyed the outdoors and in a perfect world, was as avid of a gamer as I. I imagined swapping games, having all night gaming sessions (followed by early morning humping sessions) and holding [...]

Think of the Children: Budget Gaming for Kids

Back when I was growing up, there were three main options of acquiring a video game. The game could either be purchased by you, your parents or an awesome relative who actually looked at your birthday/holiday wish-list and wanted you to be happy on that special day. Another way to play a new game was by heading down to the local video rental location and get charged 1/10 of the price of the game for 3-5 days. This way doesn’t [...]

Shiniest Objects: Protected Violence

Huge win for the industry this week as the Supreme Court ruled against California’s violent video game sales law. Hopefully, with all of this recent validation, the video game industry can actually do something with the spotlight (at least they didn’t notice Duke Nukem Forever). We focused our editorial efforts on unveiling 2 of the Mario Madness games this week in preparation for the Horrible Night Out this Friday. Every day we are on the look out for the most [...]

What We Are Playing June 2011 – The Horrible Show 062911

Surprisingly, June turned out to be a hell of a month for gaming. Justin, Cole, Ethan, and Justin run through their standout games and answer questions about Trenched, Crysis 2, Borderlands, Shadows of the Damned and others. Send in your questions to simon@horriblenight.com or @TheHorribleShow We’ve been complaining a lot lately about our backlog of summer video games, time to see if we’ve done anything about it. That is after we catch up on our Threesomes of the Week to [...]

REPLY TO ALL: The Next Duke Nukem Forever

After 14 years of a tumultuous development cycle, Duke Nukem Forever has finally been released. While we are a bit fascinated with the Duke Nukem Forever saga, we’re sad to see it end. So, we need a new saga. Who is the next 3D Realms and what developer/franchise is the next “great” game that will never come out? Justin L (JDevL) I think the reason I got interested in the business side of the industry had to do with all [...]

Tried It: World of Warcraft

It’s safe to say that we now sit somewhere in the middle of 2011 and I have learned something very important about games this year: Don’t hate on a game until you try it for yourself. I took this approach to my first article back in Feburary. I spent some time playing social games to see what all the buzz was about. I was surprised by what I learned. I also developed an appreciation for what social games are (even [...]

Blizzard Provides $800,000 to Make-A-Wish Foundation Through WoW Pet Purchases

In general, video game players haven’t been looked upon as people who care about anyone but their avatar. However, a recent charitable piece of downloadable content has improved the image of those same gamers. Blizzard released a downloadable pet for World of Warcraft players called the “Moonkin Hatchling” for $10. Half of those proceeds went to the Make-A-Wish Foundation adding up to a donation totaling $800,000. While I’m quick to give credit to the gamers for buying this DLC, it is Blizzard [...]

REPLY TO ALL: Is Single Player Dying?

Companies like Valve have started talking about moving away from single player experiences all together and combined with the recent episodes of the “internets collapsing” (PSN), do you think multiplayer games will still take over in the near future? Rob I really don’t think the PSN debacle will have much of an impact at all. I’m a little pissed about having my credentials and payment information out in who-knows-where, but it’s honestly not going to stop me from having a [...]
